Kay Georgi Comments on New US Export Compliance Regulation Reforms
The article reported that, “US export compliance regulations such as the ITAR, “set in place to protect national security, have also handcuffed American defense electronics suppliers — preventing them from competing internationally. New reforms coming out of the Obama Administration promise to loosen those controls for non-combat related aircraft and commercial satellite related items.”
In the article, Ms. Georgi detailed the complicated issues surrounding the changes to the export compliance regulations. She noted, “Export compliance, while not rocket science, does require vigilance and a rigorous attention to detail if companies and individuals want to avoid big fines and in some cases criminal charges.” She continued: “The export reform initiatives are good news, but not completely painless… It is like raising children. Many first-time parents think it’s all about the pregnancy, but that’s nothing compared with raising the child. Once State approves the export license, the job isn’t over — it’s just beginning.”
